KUALA LUMPUR: Cheam June Wei's coach, Ong Ewe Hock, hopes the world No. 61 will make a statement by winning the Kaohsiung Masters on Sunday.
June Wei, who won the Lin Dan Cup last weekend, defeated Taiwan's Cheng Kai 21-12, 21-17 in 31 minutes in Saturday's semi-finals.
The 27-year-old independent shuttler will face another Taiwanese shuttler, Lee Chia Hao, who defeated compatriot Wang Tzu Wei 21-10, 21-15, in the final.
"It's a good result. We have been working on a lot of things in training and they are paying off.
"However, he still has to work on his fitness and power to get better. I hope he will win the title in Taiwan tomorrow (on Sunday)," Ewe Hock.
It is expected to be a close final with Chia Hao having a 3-2 head-to-head advantage over June Wei.
In the men's doubles, Malaysia saw the end of the road with defeats in the semi-finals for Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong and Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong.
Azriyn-Wee Keong lost 21-16, 22-20 to Taiwan's Chen Zhi Ray-Lin Yu Chieh, while Hang Yee-Eng Cheong were edged 18-21, 21-11, 21-18 by Chang Ko Chi-Chen Xin Yuan in 51 minutes.
