Wooi Yik to surprise dad with new Chery SUV

KUALA LUMPUR: National men's doubles player Soh Wooi Yik has a "big surprise" for his father Soh Goon Chup, also a former national badminton player.

The 26-year-old player will gift his father his new Chery Tiggo 7 Pro sports utility vehicle (SUV), which he has received as a reward for winning the men's doubles bronze medal with his partner Aaron Chia at the Paris Olympics, earlier this month.

Wooi Yik said this is the first time he has ever given a big gift to his family.

"This is the first time in my life that I am giving my father a car as a gift," said the Kuala Lumpur local today.

"I will give this car to my father as a token of appreciation to my family, who have taken such good care of me all this time. Without them, I wouldn't have been able to succeed, especially on the Olympic stage."

"My father had asked me about this car before, but I hadn't told him yet because I wanted to surprise him."

Wooi Yik said the bumper reward received will inspire him to pursue more success in future tournaments.

Earlier, Wooi Yik and Aaron received a windfall when they were awarded RM100,000 each under the National Sports Incentive Scheme (Shakam) and the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro valued at RM123,800.
