KUALA LUMPUR: Korea Open champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei have finally discovered how to handle pressure and achieve success, thanks to national mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto.
The Indonesian coach's simple advice to the World No. 9, encouraging them to have more fun on the court, has profoundly impacted after their quarter-final eliminations at the Paris Olympics and Japan Open.
On Sunday, Tang Jie-Ee Wei celebrated a breakthrough by clinching their first Super 500 title, defeating China's Guo Xin Wa-Li Qian 17-21, 21-13, 21-13 in the mixed doubles final.
"After the Japan Open, I told Tang Jie-Ee Wei to enjoy their time and fight hard during matches. I assured them that a title would eventually come," Nova told Timesport today.
The strategy worked wonders, boosting their confidence and motivation at the Korea Open, especially after missing out on a medal at the Paris Olympics.
Nova, 46, also highlighted the pair's improved communication, particularly when faced with challenging situations during matches.
"What stood out for me was how they communicated better when they were down during matches. They didn't give up easily, even when trailing," added the Indonesian coach.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei had previously reached four Super 300 finals, winning the Orleans Masters and Taipei Open last year and finishing as runners-up at this year's Thailand Masters and Swiss Open.
