KL2017: Malaysia's women cricket team off to bright start with win over Singapore

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia started the women's Twenty20 cricket competition with a thumping nine-wicket win over Singapore at the Kinrara Oval today.

Singapore found runs hard to come by as they were restricted to 55 for six in 20 overs before Malaysia took just 7.3 overs to reach 58 for one.

After Yusrina Yaakop was bowled for nine by G. K. Diviya, Malaysia captain Winifred Anne Duraisingham (25) put on an unbroken partnership of 46 runs with Christina Baret (20) to steer the home side to victory.

"The girls were very excited to play and it was a good game," said Malaysia coach Thushara Kodikara. "The bowlers did very well although there were a few fielding errors which we need to avoid making."

Malaysia face gold medal favourites Thailand on Friday with Kodikara concerned his batting line-up did not get a real test.

"It's going to be tough against Thailand especially since we did not bat very long," he said.

"So we need to make sure we are ready to go on Friday."

Thailand routed Indonesia by 114 runs on Tuesday.
