JDT goalie Farizal Marlias banned from all football competitions for 12 months: AFC

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim goalkeeper Farizal Marlias has been banned from all football competitions for a year by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), effective immediately.

The AFC's disciplinary and ethics committee also fined Farizal US$40,000 for his violent reaction to being sent off in Darul Ta'zim AFC Cup match against Ceres Negros of the Philippines on May 31.

Farizal was furious after the referee awarded Ceres a late penalty in the match in Bacolod which the home club converted for a 2-1 win and advanced to the next stage of Asia's secondary club competition.

The goalkeeper was shown the red card after confronting the referee and continued with his protests by pushing the match official while refusing to leave the pitch.

"Johor Darul Ta’zim player Farizal Marlias was ordered to serve a twelve month match suspension and pay a fine of US$40,000," the AFC announced in a statement on Friday.

"The match suspension shall be served on an Asia-wide basis (in all domestic, continental and international matches, whether friendly, non-official or official matches)."

The decision means 30-year-old Farizal's career is effectively put on hold for a year as he is also deemed ineligible to play for Darul Ta'zim in the Super League and Malaysia Cup this year as well as for the national team.

Farizal, who has made 35 appearances for the national team between 2009 and 2015, was not called up for Malaysia's Asian Cup qualifier against Lebanon in Johor Baru on Tuesday.

In addition, Darul Ta'zim head coach Benjamin Mora Mendivil was ordered to pay a fine of US$7,000 for using insulting language at AFC staff and match officials after the match.
