KL deny interest in Indra Putra

KUALA LUMPUR: Indra Putra Mahayuddin's decision not to renew his contract with Kelantan will have put several Super League clubs on notice to his availability.

However, newly-promoted Kuala Lumpur are not among those chasing the former national player's signature although the city side had been linked with the widely-travelled Indra earlier.

KL FA general secretary Nokman Mustaffa denied any interest in Indra, saying the team is on the look out for defensive reinforcement rather than adding attacking options.

"I know there have been reports saying we are interested in Indra but I can say that this is not true," said Nokman on Sunday.

"Our coach (Fabio Maciel) has not indicated that he wants more attacking players.

"Instead, we want to add players in the defensive department besides looking for a third goalkeeper."

Forward Indra, 36, announced on Saturday he will not seek an extension on his contract with Kelantan after reports claimed the Super League side had made him an offer, which he denied.

"I was supposed to discuss with Kelantan about staying on after I return from a holiday on Monday but since they have decided not to retain me, I accept it as a professional," said Indra on Instagram.

"Claims that I had been offered a contract by Kelantan but chose not to accept it is not true. I also have a right to enter discussions with other teams since my contract with Kelantan expires this month."

KL have been in talks with centre-back Shahrom Kalam, an ex-KL captain, whose contract with Perak expires this month, as well as Australia-born midfielder Brendan Gan.

The Premier League champions missed out on signing Kedah left-back Fitri Omar, who has agreed to join another promoted team Terengganu instead.

KL's need for defenders is acute since they have still not agreed an extension with Uzbek centre-back Boburjon Akbarov.

"We are exploring our options with regard to defenders but we are not too concerned in missing out on Fitri since we have ample cover in that position," said Nokman, referring to Azmeer Yusof and Farid Ramli for the left-back slot.
