JDT lift Charity Cup with dominating win over Kedah

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) won the Charity Cup for a third time after coming from behind to beat Kedah 2-1 at the Larkin Stadium in Johor Baru on Saturday.

The match doubled as a Super League fixture which four-time champions JDT largely dominated to extend their unbeaten home run to 46 games despite going behind in the 15th minute.

Pablo Pallares stunned Larkin into silence when he slotted past goalkeeper Izham Tarmizi Roslan after Sandro Mendonca floated the ball over a static JDT defence.

But after Gonzalo Cabrera saw his deflected cross bounce off the Kedah crossbar, Luciano Figueroa drew Darul Ta'zim level with a header from Safiq Rahim's free-kick.

Figueroa then had another header come back off the bar as JDT, starting with just four Malaysian-born players, finished the first half strongly.

Marcos Antonio Santos scored JDT's winner with a 58th-minute header which went in off the post from a cross by the country's newest naturalised player La'Vere Corbin-Ong.

In other matches, Melaka edged Kelantan 2-1 at the Hang Jebat Stadium while Terengganu and PKNS shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw in Kuala Terengganu.

Bruno Lopes poked the ball in from a free-kick to put Kelantan ahead after one minute but Melaka equalised nine minutes later when Yahor Zubovich produced a fine finish from R. Surendran's long ball into the box.

Jeon Woo-young scored from the penalty spot for Melaka's winner in the 31st minute after Amiridzwan Taj Tajuddin fell S. Chanturu.

Terengganu striker Kipre Tchetche converted a penalty in the 37th minute at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium only for Qayyum Marjoni Sabil to reply three minutes later with a deflected shot for PKNS.

Rafael Ramazotti ran unchallenge half the length of the field to slot in the second goal for PKNS in the 69th minute but Tchetche unleashed a fine low drive five minutes later to make it 2-2.

In the evening kick-off, Keo Sokpheng had the honour of scoring the first Super League goal of the season and becoming the first Cambodian to do so in an M-League match as Perak SEDC marked their top-flight debut by beating Negri Sembilan 1-0 in Batu Kawan.
