KUALA LUMPUR: The FA of Malaysia (FAM) will introduce a new format for the FAM Cup, a third-tier competition after the Super League and Premier League, next year.
For now, only six teams — Terengganu FC II (TFCII), Armed Forces, Kuching FA, Young Fighters FC, Perlis and the Kota Baru City Council — have registered for next season’s competition.
The national body have confirmed that despite the poor response, the FAM Cup will not be scrapped.
FAM deputy president Datuk Yusoff Mahadi said a new format will finalised soon to make the competition more attractive.
“We are in the discussion stage over the new format and we may repackage the competition if necessary. I believe the facelift will attract more teams,” said Yusoff after the national body’s executive committee meeting here on Saturday.
It is learnt that FAM are planning to turn the FAM Cup into a knockout tournament, reserved only for amateur teams.
Last season, a total 14 teams participated in the tournament.
