“SACK Ong Kim Swee,” said a disgruntled Malaysian fan on Facebook, while others lambasted the coach for his team’s poor tactical approach.
This came after Malaysia’s shock 1-0 defeat by the Philippines in Friday’s Group A match in Manila.
The critics also questioned captain Adam Nor Azlin’s leadership qualities while some commented hat the team played like headless chickens.
Adam, hurt by the remarks, hopes that the fans will stop abusing the team on social media but instead encourage the players and the coaches for Malaysia’s remaining group matches against Timor Leste and Cambodia.
“I know the fans have started their social media war against the team. However, I hope they will stop the abuse. It is the last thing the players need at this moment.
“Of course, we are disappointed. As players, we are responsible in upholding the country’s pride and dignity on the pitch. We hope the fans will stop hammering us on social media.
“I understand that the fans are upset as we had lost to Philippines, who are regarded as minnows in the Sea Games football competition.”
“But it is not over yet. We still have a chance to bounce back. We need the fans to support us,” said Adam.
