Curran Singh calls for Melaka to be punished if they fail to pay him

KUALA LUMPUR: Melaka United have, until Feb 17, to pay their former player, Curran Singh Ferns RM97,500 in salary compensation or face the possibility of being punished by the authorities.

The revelation came a day after Timesport revealed that the Super League side had lapsed in the 45-day period in settling the claims of another former player, Narupon Wild.

Fifa ordered Melaka to pay Wild RM241,726.69 in salary compensation within 45 days, which commenced on Nov 12 last year

The Thai-born Wild, who severed ties with Melaka in July last year, has yet to receive his money.

As for Currans, he filed a complaint (against Melaka) with the FA of Malaysia (FAM) status committee through the Professional Footballers Association of Malaysia (PFAM).

"They (Melaka) owe me money, and the deadline is Feb 17. If Melaka fail to pay, the only reasonable punishment would be to revoke their club licence and banish them from the Super League."

The 27-year-old, who currently resides in Melbourne, said he has severed ties with Melaka after months of dispute over salary arrears.

Meanwhile, Melaka United FC (MUFC) chief executive officer Datuk Saiful Mat Sapri confirmed that they had received Fifa's transfer ban (mid-season) orders for Wild's unpaid claims.

He also said they were aware of the deadline to settle Curran's compensation.

"We are aware, and we will try to settle it (Wild's claims). Although the deadline is up, we will try to settle it as soon as possible. We will source for the funding to settle the amount.

"(For Curran), we are also aware of it and will pay him as soon as possible."

It is learnt that Melaka were given until yesterday by FAM to settle their contributions to the Employees Provident Fund and Inland Revenue Board.

Saiful, however, could not confirm the total amount of the remaining back wages owed to players but said the lack of sponsors last year has impacted their finances for this season.

"This year's budget has been slashed by 50 per cent. We are sourcing for sponsors. We are opening up opportunities for companies to do business with the club," he added.

Last season, Melaka were docked three points for failing to meet a payment schedule to settle salary arrears.
