WHILE Daniel Ting has returned to England after parting ways with KL City, Selangor admitted they were chasing him for his signature last season.
However, the Red Giants decided against it after finding out that the defender had an auto-extension contract with KL.
The naturalised defender decided not to return to KL after the Malaysia Cup final over personal reasons and is now back in England.
Selangor team manager Mahfizul Rusydin Abdul Rashid said: "We did approach Daniel last year, but when we found out about his contract terms, we decided not to pursue his signature.
"Instead, we signed Fazly Mazlan to beef up our defence."
The Red Giants will open their Super League campaign against KL in Cheras on Friday.
KL had lost 3-0 to Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) in the Charity Cup on Saturday.
"We do not see KL's defeat to JDT as an advantage to us.
"Furthermore, we still have to work on our chemistry.
"KL could have a slight advantage as they have gained competitive minutes in the Charity Cup.
"They are probably fine-tuning their weaknesses ahead of Friday's game," said Mahfizul.
Captain Brendan Gan and Safuwan Baharuddin are injured and will not be available on Friday.
Mahfizul said Selangor's new foreign signings need at least two matches to adapt to coach Michael Feichtenbeiner's system of play. Jordanians Yazan Al-Arab and Baha' Abdel-Rahman and Brazilians Herlison Caion and Hyuri Henrique are the new foreign signings.
"We are now working on our flaws, which we identified during our friendly matches."
KL were unbeaten in 17 matches at home last season, and they will be motivated to extend their record.
"One point from this match will be OK for us as we know they were unbeaten last season," he added.
