KUALA LUMPUR: Following Malaysia's exit from the second round of World Cup qualifying on Tuesday, South Korean coach Kim Pan Gon said he will stay on to guide the national football team in the qualifying campaign for the 2027 Asia Cup.
"I want to stay on, I have never asked to leave the team," said Pan Gon after Malaysia's 3-1 win over Taiwan in their final Group D match at the National Stadium.
"We will fight on. Leaving the team is not the result I can take," said Pan Gon.
"We targeted to get at least seven goals (against Taiwan) but we couldn't, and it's a painful situation.
"Our strategy didn't work and there were mistakes in the first half, and we conceded a goal.
"We bounced back in the second half, and we need to learn from this match to be better in the future."
Malaysia finished third in Group D behind Oman and Kyrgyzstan while Taiwan ended up last.
