Sukma 2024: Kelantan football team manager rubbishes neglect claims

KUCHING: The Kelantan football team currently competing at the Sarawak Malaysia Games (Sukma) has not been neglected by their state, says their team manager Datuk Azmi Ariffin.

Azmi disclosed that each player either receives a salary or fixed allowance as they are also part of Kelantan's President's Cup squad.

At Sukma, they also receive incentives - including additional pocket money after each win - and have also been equipped with complete attire kits for the competition.

Azmi said the team had undergone training in Sibu before heading to Mukah for the Sukma competition which shows they are well prepared.

"The Kelantan State Sports Council and team management places great emphasis on the welfare of the athletes during Sukma," said Azmi today.

"I don't understand how the issue of players not receiving their attire and allowances can crop up when in fact we reward them with incentives every time they win, including after their win over Johor.

"At the same time, we try our best to fulfil their requests."

Recently, claims were made that the Kelantan squad were competing without any allowances at Sukma, were not given the official Kelantan contingent attire and also did not receive any other form of support.

Despite the claims, they were still able to upset Johor in the quarterfinals earlier this week. The latter have been strengthened by Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) II players.

Azmi added that he will meet with Kelantan Sukma squad head coach Ariff Hashim to obtain an explanation.

"I have been informed that this (neglect) issue was raised by the coach who was only brought in a month ago," said Azmi.

Kelantan are scheduled to face Federal Territories while defending champions Terengganu will play Melaka in the semi-finals tomorrow.
