'If players have no quality, having the best coaches won't help'

KUALA LUMPUR: National winger Faisal Halim said no matter how good a coach is, a team's success is ultimately decided by the quality of the players.

Faisal said this as the FA of Malaysia looks for a new national coach following the sudden resignation of South Korean Kim Pan Gon.

Spaniard Pau Marti Vicente, who was Pan Gon's assistant, has been appointed as Harimau Malaya caretaker coach.

The upcoming FA of Malaysia (FAM) congress, which will determine its leadership for the 2025-2028 term, could have a bearing on who will be the new national head coach.

Faisal's comments came in light of the FAM congress. And he hopes that this will not in any way, disrupt the harmony of the national team.

Asked whether Datuk Hamidin Amin should continue as FAM president, Faisal said: "Having been part of the national setup from the Under-19 side to the senior team, I can say Hamidin has always been a pillar of support.

"He's dedicated, understands what the team need, and is consistently involved.

"Being a president is not an easy job, it comes with immense responsibility. At the club-level, fans often hurl criticism at players and management.

"But if the players lack quality, even the best coach will struggle to make a difference," he said.
