KUALA LUMPUR: Harimau Malaya could be on the verge of a major overhaul, with plans in motion to manage the national football team more independently.
The Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, owner of Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), revealed a document titled "National Squad Strategy" on his Instagram account, indicating that Harimau Malaya might soon operate separately from the FA of Malaysia (FAM).
This development comes after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a RM15 million allocation for the national football team's development and player welfare today.
Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, said RM10 million would be provided by the ministry, with the remaining RM5 million contributed by private companies.
The organisational chart shared by Tunku Ismail suggests that the new structure would be led by a chief soccer officer (CSO) or technical director, supported by a coaching director, head of operations, head coach, strategy & insight director and a performance head.
In the same post, Tunku Ismail mentioned Dec 15, 2024, without offering further details.
Last week, Tunku Ismail met with Anwar to discuss various current issues, including Malaysian football and efforts to strengthen the sport.
Currently, FAM manages the national team.
Anwar's vision is for Harimau Malaya to become a dominant force in Asian football.
"If we can secure managers and coaches who truly demonstrate their commitment, then it's fine, even if they are from abroad… perhaps for the initial stages," he said.
"I believe we can elevate the reputation and standing of Harimau Malaya."
To ensure proper governance, a senior official from the Finance Ministry will be appointed to oversee the financial management of this initiative.
Anwar plans to meet with Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and FAM on the matter after returning from an official visit to Russia.
