Empty stands greet Harimau Malaya as fans boycott Merdeka Tournament [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: The iconic National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, usually a cauldron of passion and noise, was eerily quiet today as Malaysian football fans stayed away in droves, following through on a widespread boycott of the Merdeka Tournament.

Despite Harimau Malaya's clash with the Philippines, only about 3,000 paying fans attended, leaving the 85,000-seat venue largely empty — a stark contrast to the usual fervour associated with the national team.

By 8.30pm, the stands were nearly deserted, with far fewer vendors than usual plying their trade.

The subdued atmosphere was a telling sign of the discontent brewing among the fanbase.

One such fan, Hasrul Tajuddin, a loyal supporter from Seri Kembangan, lamented the poor turnout.

"This is the worst I've ever seen. The fans adored Kim Pan Gon, and his resignation has left many of us disillusioned. I hope FAM can turn things around, but tonight, it's a sad sight."

Some of those who did attend admitted they were there only because of free tickets.

Mas Amirah Azhar, another fan, noted the difference in atmosphere.

"The boycott is off-field, but as supporters, we must keep backing the players. Still, I was shocked at how few people came."

The boycott, organised by the group 'Pemain Ke-12' (The 12th Player), highlights growing frustration with the state of Malaysian football.

The 'Ekor Harimau Malaya' (Malayan Tiger's supporters) feel let down by the sport's management and are making their voices heard by staying away.

Nurul Amira, another fan who defied the boycott, hopes of being a lucky charm for the team.

"I hope we win tonight. I'm predicting a 2-0 victory."
