KUALA LUMPUR: Striker Romel Morales dedicated Harimau Malaya's Merdeka Tournament triumph to the nation's loyal supporters, as his decisive goal saw Malaysia edge Lebanon 1-0 in Sunday's final at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil.
Morales struck in the 33rd minute to seal victory over world No. 116 Lebanon, ending world No. 134 Malaysia's 14-year wait for a senior title, their last coming in the 2010 AFF Cup.
Though Malaysia won the 2013 Merdeka Tournament, it was an Under-23 competition, making this triumph even more significant for the senior team.
The naturalised forward highlighted the team's hard work and determination, despite challenges such as the absence of the Ultras Malaya, who boycotted the tournament in protest.
"I'm incredibly proud of the team. We truly deserved this win after working hard from day one," said Morales.
"This victory is a gift to our loyal supporters who have stood by us. It's sad about the boycott, but we remained focused and this win is for the fans."
For caretaker coach Pau Marti Vicente, the victory was extra sweet, as he lifted his first trophy with Harimau Malaya after just two matches in charge.
It also avenged last year's heartbreak, when Malaysia lost 2-0 to Tajikistan in the final, with Vicente serving as assistant coach under Kim Pan Gon.
