KUALA LUMPUR: Film producer and screenwriter Datuk Afdlin Shauki is reportedly one of three candidates in the running for the Kuala Lumpur FA (KLFA) president's post, with elections set for Oct 12.
KL United FC director Syed Yazid Syed Omar and Brunei Darussalam executive advisor Datuk Azril Mat Drus are also expected to throw their hats in the ring for the top position.
However, KLFA has yet to officially confirm the list of candidates.
The elections, initially scheduled for Sept 7, were postponed due to a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into alleged misappropriation of funds.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil had previously shown interest in contesting but withdrew after a cabinet directive advised ministers against holding positions in sports associations.
Afdlin, who recently directed the documentary Harimau Malaya: The Untold Journey, which premiered last month, is now showing a growing interest in football.
The multi-talented figure is also known for his work as a singer, actor, and director of several popular Malaysian films.
Azril, a well-known figure in local football, also serves as executive advisor for KLFA League side Setiawangsa Rangers FC.
Sources claim several KLFA affiliates are urging him to run for the presidency.
"The affiliates are pushing for Azril's candidacy, and he is seriously considering it," said the source.
When contacted, Azril remained non-committal about his plans.
"It's up to the affiliates to decide. If I am needed, whether as president, deputy president, vice president, or even an exco member, I will certainly consider it for the betterment of KL football," said Azril.
He also praised Super League side KL City FC's recent achievements.
"KL City FC have great potential. Despite being a small club, they have reached three finals (2021 Malaysia Cup, 2022 AFC Cup, 2023 FA Cup) and are competing in this year's Asean Club Championship.
"It shows the club has the capacity to grow," Azril added.
