KUALA LUMPUR: Ramadhan Saifullah's brilliant first-half goal handed Kuching City a 1-0 victory over Penang in their Malaysia Cup opener at the City Stadium today.
The 24-year-old forward, on loan from Johor Darul Ta'zim, scored a spectacular goal in the 44th minute, firing a powerful shot from the left flank that sailed past Penang goalkeeper Sikh Izhan Nazrel Sikh Azman.
In front of 663 spectators, the match was evenly contested, with both sides battling through a light drizzle, making for a heavy surface.
Despite the efforts from both teams, no further goals were scored, leaving Aidil Sharin Sahak's side with a vital advantage as they prepare for the return leg in the round of 16 at the State Stadium in Sarawak on Nov 30.
For Penang, it was a disappointing start under new head coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail, as his team struggled to find the equaliser despite promising moments.
