KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor's hopes of advancing to the Asian Champions League 2 (ACL2) knockout stage were dashed despite a commanding 4-0 win over Cebu in their final Group H match today.
The Red Giants struck through Yohandry Orozco (44th and 48th minutes), Nooa Laine (57th) and Alvin Fortes (79th) at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
However, their efforts proved in vain as Thailand's Muangthong United edged South Korea's Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors 1-0 at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok to clinch the final spot in the round of 16.
Selangor finished third in Group H with 10 points, just one point behind Muangthong.
Jeonbuk topped the group with 12 points, while Cebu languished at the bottom with just a single point.
The elimination marks another disappointment for Selangor, who were recently knocked out of the Malaysia Cup in the round of 16 following a 3-2 aggregate loss to Sri Pahang.
