KUALA LUMPUR: English Premier League giants Manchester United are set to make a much-anticipated return to Malaysia next year.
According to sources, the Red Devils will stop in Kuala Lumpur during their pre-season tour likely in May or June for a friendly against another European side.
United last graced Malaysian shores in 2009 during their pre-season tour of Asia.
They played Harimau Malaya twice at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, winning 3-2 on July 18 and 2-0 on July 20.
Originally, the team had been scheduled to play an Indonesian Super League Select XI at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on July 20.
However, the devastating bombings in Jakarta on July 17 forced the club to cancel the fixture.
Liverpool were the last Premier League side to visit Malaysia, facing a Malaysian XI under Datuk Dollah Salleh in 2015.
That match, held at the National Stadium, ended in a 1-1 draw.
Football-crazed Malaysia has long been a popular destination for Premier League clubs on pre-season tours, owing to the local support for English football.
Premier League clubs that have played in Malaysia include Everton, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Norwich City, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham.
