Replenished Sabah upbeat ahead of Malaysia Cup clash

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sabah squad is brimming with confidence ahead of their Malaysia Cup quarterfinal, first leg clash with Kuching City tomorrow (Dec 15).

This is because three of their key players have returned from national team duty.

Head coach Martin Stano is confident the presence of Stuart Wilkin, Dominic Tan and Daniel Ting will elevate the team's performance at the State Stadium in Sarawak.

The trio recently represented Malaysia at the 2024-2025 Asean Cup.

"This is excellent news for us. Their return will certainly enhance the team's performance and it's even more exciting to have our captain, Park Tae Soo, available for the first leg match," said Stano.

The players' involvement in the upcoming Malaysia Cup match comes as part of an agreement between Sabah and the FA of Malaysia (FAM).

"We're very pleased with the arrangement. We'll give our best to secure a positive result. Although we won our last Super League match in Kuching, this is a whole new ball game and we're fully aware of the challenge ahead," added Stano.

"The Malaysia Cup has its own unique atmosphere and we are determined not to let this golden opportunity slip.

"For me personally, this will be a memorable moment as it marks my first match as Sabah head coach."

Stano is looking to maintain the same winning mindset that has served the team well in the past, urging his players to stay grounded and focused despite their recent success.

"We must keep our focus and not underestimate any opponent, even though we secured a win in our last Super League encounter," said Stano.

"Consistency and a winning mentality are key. At the same time, we are closely monitoring the physical condition of several players who have suffered injuries after representing the national team in recent matches," said Stano.
