KUALA LUMPUR: Businessman Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin has announced his interest in contesting for the top post at the FA of Malaysia (FAM) elections on Feb 15.
To qualify, Shahriman must secure six nominations from the 18 affiliates eligible to vote, with the deadline for submissions set for Jan 16.
Shahriman, who also serves as the Malaysia Paralympic Council (MPC) president, said that his primary motivation for running is to ensure transparency in FAM's financial dealings.
"With an organisation as large as FAM, I want to examine its financial liabilities and allow affiliates to trace the money trail. If there are any irregularities, they can decide how to address them," Shahriman said during a press conference here.
The businessman clarified that he is not seeking a leadership role with the BA of Malaysia (BAM) but finds the FAM elections "interesting" due to the number of individuals expressing interest in various positions.
"Perhaps, I might submit my nomination a day before the deadline," he said.
If elected, Shahriman plans to prioritise auditing the association's financial records. He also assured stakeholders he would not draw a salary, citing his experience leading the MPC for five years without remuneration.
"Transparency is crucial. Members and affiliates must know the extent of any financial losses to plan effectively," he said.
Shahriman said an effective leader must be decisive and work collaboratively with the executive committee to improve the sport.
"A president must address discrepancies, ensure accountability, and deal firmly with detractors. A yes-man approach won't work," he added.
Among others reportedly eyeing the top post are current vice-president Datuk Joehari Ayub and former deputy president Datuk Seri Afandi Hamzah.
