Confident Ben Leong aim to make cut at Maybank Championship

KUALA LUMPUR: Ben Leong is raring for action at the Maybank Championship, which starts today at the Saujana Golf & Country Club, following a bright start to the season.

The 30-year-old finished 35th in the season opening Myanmar Open before taking 23rd spot at last weekend’s Singapore Open.

However, Leong, the 2008 Selangor Masters winner, is not setting a target for the Maybank Championship.

He just wants to maintain his positive start to the season and perform well.

“I normally struggle in the beginning of the year but I have already made two cuts in the first month of 2018. I wasn’t playing the way I wanted but I am proud of myself. I was patient with my shots,” said Leong.

“The Asian Tour’s schedule looks good, and hopefully I can peak in the tournaments.

As for the Maybank Championship, Leong hopes to improve his swing, which he has been struggling with since he returned to the tour following a career-threatening back injury in 2012 and 2013.

“I have been struggling with my swings. I am not doing what I want but things are getting better.

“My performances in recent tournaments show I am making inroads,” Leong added.

Among the other golfers in the fray are defending champion Fabrizio Zanotti, World No 12 Henrik Stenson, Asian No 1 Gavin Green and former World No 1 Lee Westwood.
