KUALA LUMPUR: National golfer Gavin Green notched his fifth top-10 finish on the DP World Tour this season, finishing in a commendable tied-eighth place at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland on Sunday.
The 29-year-old carded a final round of four-under 66 at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, finishing the week with a 14-under 266 total – five strokes behind Swedish winner, Ludvig Aberg.
Gavin began the tournament brilliantly on Thursday, firing a 63 to join a six-way tie for the lead.
Despite posting solid scores of 69 and 68 over the next two days, he couldn't climb further and slipped to tied-12th after the penultimate day.
To Gavin's credit, he battled hard in the final round, recording six birdies and two bogeys. This marked his best result in five outings at the tournament; his previous best was a tied-12th in both 2018 and 2019.
This performance earned Gavin a sizeable €51,500 paycheque (RM259,000), pushing his season earnings to 370,030 euros.
More crucially, this result propelled him four spots higher to No. 72 in the season-long Race to Dubai rankings. This boost is vital as he aims to make the top-50 cut for the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
Gavin, set to compete in the Irish Open this week, is keen to surpass his achievements from the previous season. Last year, he finished at a career-best 31st in the Race to Dubai, amassing 902,087 euros in prize money.
For Gavin to reach his aspirations, it's imperative he qualifies for the DP World Tour Championship, given the substantial ranking points on offer and a hefty prize fund of US$10 million.
