Gavin set for best Olympic finish after strong third round

KUALA LUMPUR: Gavin Green is on track for his best finish at the Olympics after carding a second consecutive two-under 69 in the third round at Le Golf National in Paris on Saturday.

The solid performance moved the 30-year-old up to joint 38th with a total of one-under 212, with 18 holes remaining.

In a near-identical round to Friday, Gavin started strong but could not quite maintain the momentum.

He made birdies on the third and fifth holes, with his third coming at the 14th.

Unfortunately, he couldn't finish with a flawless card after dropping a bogey on the final hole.

If all goes well, Gavin looks set to make his third Games appearance his best yet, after previously finishing 47th at Rio 2016.

American Xander Schauffele remains in strong contention for a successful defence, keeping himself at the top of the leaderboard on 14-under following a 68.

However, Schauffele faces a strong challenge from Spain's Jon Rahm, who fired a 66 to join him in the lead.

The race for the gold medal remains wide open, with Britain's Tommy Fleetwood just a shot back, while Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama are within striking distance at 11-under.
