Green climbs leaderboard despite late bogeys at Paris Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR: Gavin Green experienced mixed fortunes as two late bogeys resulted in a two-under 69 in the second round of the Paris Olympic men's golf competition on Friday.

Despite this, it was an improvement from his opening round.

Gavin, who started with a 74 at Le Golf National, moved up seven places to tie for 46th alongside five others, including 2023 US Open champion Wyndham Clark, with a total of one-over 143.

At the halfway mark, Gavin found himself trailing well behind the leaders — Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, American Xander Schauffele and Britain's Tommy Fleetwood — who were tied at 11-under overall.

The DP World Tour player began the day in fine form, birdieing three of his first four holes.

However, he struggled to build on this momentum.

He added another birdie on the 11th hole, but his hopes of a bogey-free round were dashed when he hit into the water on the par-three 16th, leading to a bogey.

He then dropped another shot with a bogey on the 17th.

With 36 holes left, a podium finish appears challenging for Gavin.

Nonetheless, he's still in contention for his best showing in three Olympic appearances.

He finished 47th in his debut at Rio 2016 and tied for 57th in Tokyo three years ago.
