KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional won the Charity Shield by edging treble champions Terengganu 3-1 in a penalty shootout after both teams were tied 2-2 in regulation time in the Malaysia Hockey League today
Shahril Saabah, Nik Aiman Nik Rozemi and Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal converted the penalties for Tenaga at the National Hockey Stadium while captain Fitri Saari converted for Terengganu.
South Korean Jang Jong Hyun (third) and Azrai Aizad (24th) scored for Tenaga in regulation time while Fitri got a brace for Terengganu (24th, 49th).
Tenaga have five points from one win and two draws. Earlier, they drew 3-3 with Maybank before outplaying TNB Thunderbolts 6-0.
However, Tenaga coach Nor Saiful Zaini was not satisfied with his team's performance as they missed a lot of chances.
"We have 10 national players but they did not perform to their true form, and we also failed to convert four penalty corners despite having Jong Hyun in the team," said Saiful.
Meanwhile, Malaysian University won the women's Charity Shield by defeating treble champions Negri Sembilan 3-0 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 2-2 in regulation time.
Malaysian University coach Lailin Abu Hassan said it feels "really nice" to end Negri's dominance to win the Charity Shield.
The varsity team have five points from three matches. Earlier, they drew 1-1 with QNET Phoenix and thrashed newcomers KL City 8-0.
"I praised my players for their fighting spirits against a Negri team powered by a few national players and two imports from China."
