KUALA LUMPUR: Several squash players were injured when the bus transporting them to the Sea Games competition venue in Bukit Jalil was involved in a collision today.
The players from Myanmar, Philippines and Thailand are being treated at the National Sports Institute.
The squash competition has been temporarily halted.
At press time, it is unclear as to how many players were injured or the severity of the injuries.
"We are putting the tournament on hold and will resume once we have received a report from the medical authorities," said Sea Games squash competition manager K. Sivanesan.
"The first round of the mixed doubles which is due to begin at 2pm will be delayed. The players will be able to take part only after receiving medical clearance."
The squash competition began with the first round of the men's and women's doubles, with the quarter-finals due to begin at 7pm.
* Update: 11.30am
* The accident is believed to have taken place at 7.50am near the Sungai Besi toll plaza as the buses were travelling towards the KESAS highway.
It took place when the leading bus braked suddenly to avoid hitting a motorcycle which had cut into its lane. This saw the bus at the back rear-ending the bus in the front.
The two buses were ferrying athletes from Thailand (13 athletes), Philippines (5 athletes), Myanmar (10 athletes). The athletes were on the way from Marriot Putrajaya Hotel to the National Squash Centre at Bukit Jalil.
The athletes arrived at their destination in alternate buses.
