Silat world champions could face the axe for Asian Games

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian National Silat Federation (PESAKA) have dropped a broadside hint that silat exponents who are world champions could be dropped from the squad bound for the Indonesian Asian Games which takes place this coming August.

This startling latest development was confirmed by PESAKA secretary-general Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin, who explained that such actions will be taken to ensure only the very best exponents make up the national squad who will compete in Indonesia.

"National silat exponents are currently in the Philippines and will return to Malaysia on May 31 (Thursday). As soon as they return, only then will we name the final list of silat exponents who will represent the country at the Asian Games.

“Perhaps one or two silat exponents who won gold at last year’s Kuala Lumpur Sea Games could be dropped because of poor performance,” said Megat Zulkarnain, who also did not discount the fact that among those who could face the axe are those who are world champions.

According to Megat Zulkarnain, they are very serious on this matter and are unperturbed even if they have to take on new silat exponents and train them up in the little time that is left.

"We will also announce PESAKA’s target for the Asian Games very soon after that,” he said.

Malaysian silat exponents dominated last year’s Kuala Lumpur Sea Games by winning 10 gold medals, and it is hoped that they will be able to replicate such an achievement on a bigger stage in Indonesia come August.
