KUALA LUMPUR: S. Suresh has etched his name in history books by becoming Malaysia’s first world champion in para archery.
On Sunday, the 25-year-old completed his gallant run in the World Archery Para Championships in s-Hertogenbosch when he won the men’s para recurve gold medal.
The Kedah-born defeated 2015 world champion Eric Bennett of the United States 7-3 (26-28, 26-26, 27-25, 26-25, 29-27).
Suresh’s achievement is the first in a major para archery event after Hasihin Nawawi’s success of winning silver at the 2012 London Paralympic Games.
Previously, Malaysia’s best achievement in the World Archery Para Championships was Salam Sidik’s bronze medal feat in Turin in 2011.
Suresh has already qualified for next year’s Tokyo Paralympics after reaching the top 16 in s-Hertogenbosch on Saturday.
