MANILA: Malaysia secured the men’s and women’s floorball bronze medals by beating Philippines in their respective third place matches today.
While the men’s team recorded a 7-4 win over the Filipinos, the women’s team had to fight until the end to edge the home side 1-0 in extra-time through Nurfarah Yusof’s goal.
In 2015 in Singapore, Malaysia won bronze in the men’s division. Floorball was not contested in Kuala Lumpur two years ago.
“We are thrilled as we came here with a new team,” said women’s captain Cheah Pei Yi.
“About 70 per cent of our players are new while the others were in the team in 2015.
“We played against our men’s team in the build-up to the Games, and these friendly matches helped us to toughen up.”
Before the Sea Games, Malaysia played in the Women’s World Championship qualifiers, where they were denied a spot after losing 2-1 to Thailand.
