KUALA LUMPUR: Rookie Azreen Nabila Alias achieved a personal best in the women's 100m while seasoned campaigner Lee Hup Wei failed to even set a mark in the men's high jump at the Tokyo Olympics on Friday.
Azreen clocked 11.77s to finish second in heat two (preliminary round) to advance to the first round proper.
The 21-year-old, who earned a wildcard to compete in the Olympics, had a previous best of 11.81s, set at the 2018 Malaysia Games in Ipoh but had not dipped below 12s for more than a year.
However, Azreen finished seventh in heat six of round one when she clocked 11.91s.
Only the top-three sprinters in her race made the semi-finals.
Azreen deserves credit as she did not suffer stage fright in her maiden Olympics.
However, triple Olympian Hup Wei could not even clear the starting mark of 2.17m in all three attempts.
Hup Wei had set a target to reach the final.
