Divers target clean sweep

Li Rui will bank on new faces and combinations to help Malaysia continue dominating diving at the Hanoi Sea Games on May 12-23.

The coach from China said the national squad's target is to sweep all eight gold medals on offer.

All eyes will be on the new platform synchronised pairing of Pandelela Rinong and Nur Dhabitah Sabri as the former's previous partners, Cheong Jun Hoong and Leong Mun Yee, have both retired.

Springboard specialist Wendy Ng has also formed a new partnership with Sea Games debutante Ong Ker Ying.

Malaysia had won all four gold medals on offer at the 2019 Philippines Sea Games.

"Our target is to win eight gold," said Li Rui during a press conference in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

"For some of the divers, including Ker Ying, this will be their first time competing in the Sea Games, so it might be a challenge for them.

"They, however, have been preparing well for the competition.

"Dhabitah is pairing up with Pandelela and we have been preparing her since the Tokyo Olympics.

"Dhabitah has performed quite well so far in training especially considering that she has not been competing (in platform) for three years."

The other Sea Games first-timers include Bertand Rhodict, Enrique MacCartney Harold and Kimberly Bong.

Li Rui said the full squad will only be finalised after the Malaysia Invitational Age Group Championships in Ipoh on April 22-23.

Mun Yee, who will serve as team manager for the Sea Games squad, said adapting to the games venue ahead of the competition is imperative.

"As team manager, I feel that it is important we go there earlier to prepare because it is a new venue and the boards will also be new," she said.

"In diving, anything can happen. You could slip on the boards, who knows?

"So it is important that we test the facilities properly before the competition starts."
