It's a family affair for the Sumantris

The Sumantri family have a strong tradition in Malaysian hockey, and one of them is poised to play in next year's World Cup in India.

Norsyafiq is certainly making an impact in the ongoing Asia Cup.

He scored his first senior international goals for the Speedy Tigers, a brace, in the 5-4 win over South Korea in Tuesday's Group B match at GBK Stadium in Jakarta.

His brother Nor Izzat and sister Norazlin were in the men's and women's national teams, but both did not get a chance to play in the World Cup.

"It was great to score for Malaysia. I believe I can contribute more here.

"I come from a hockey-loving family, thanks to my father, but none of us have played in the World Cup.

"I have a great chance of being the first in my family, and I will give my best to achieve this dream," said the Klang-born Norsyafiq.

Malaysia have qualified for the next stage after two wins in Group B. They play their final group match against minnows Bangladesh today.

"I played field hockey first before switching to the indoor game. However, I returned to field hockey, and the experiences have made me a better player," he added.

Norsyafiq had led Malaysia to the men's indoor gold medal at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Sea Games.
