KUALA LUMPUR: The iconic Shah Alam Stadium is set for a new lease of life following the Selangor state government's decision to redevelop it.
The Selangor government has handed a letter of intent (LOI) to Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) to come out with a detailed proposal on upgrading or redeveloping the Shah Alam Stadium Complex.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said today the decision to redevelop was made after a thorough consideration, and the plans for the upgraded stadium will be publicly displayed in September.
Amirudin said MRCB, who handled the refurbishment of the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil for the 2017 Sea Games, was chosen out of 15 other prospective companies.
He said it would cost almost double to refurbish the 28-year-old stadium which cost RM400 million back in 1994.
The Shah Alam Stadium was the biggest in the country until the completion of the National Stadium in 1998.
The 83,000-capacity Shah Alam Stadium has major structural defects with a poor pitch, a leaking roof and rotting structures, rendering it unsafe.
This has forced the Selangor Super League team to move their home matches to the MBPJ Stadium in Kelana Jaya from 2021.
