Squash: Doyce earns British Junior Open boost with REDtone win

KUALA LUMPUR: Top seed Doyce Lee exacted sweet revenge over Ena Kwong of Hong Kong to win her maiden REDtone International Junior Open Squash Championships girls' Under-17 title today.

The Sabahan, who lost to Ena in the Under-15 semi-finals of the Asian Junior Championships in Macau in 2017, won 8-11, 6-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8 at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil.

The 15-year-old Doyce said she started off badly due to unforced errors.

"I was under pressure after losing the opening two sets. But I never gave up and fought hard for every point.

"I was trailing 9-10 in the fourth set but was lucky to win it to force a decider.

"I played an attacking game in the decider, and it paid off as she was slow in retrieving my shots.

"The win is a boost ahead of my third British Junior Open (in Birmingham from Jan 2-6) outing."

Meanwhile, Harith Danial Jefri stunned top seed Andrik Lim 11-8, 11-13, 11-6, 11-8 in the boys' Under-19 final.

The 16-year-old Harith from Miri, who upset joint third-fourth seed Low Wa Sern in straight sets in the semi-finals, said he had defied the odds to win the title.

"I am now looking forward to putting up a good performance in the British Junior Open," said the joint fifth and eighth seed, the Under-13 runner-up in Birmingham in 2019.
