Hoe Yean claims unexpected national record at Malaysia Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Fatigue did not stop Khiew Hoe Yean from breaking the men's 200 metre individual medley national record at the Malaysia Open Swimming Championships in Bukit Jalil today.

Hoe Yean clocked 2:03.77s to erase the former mark of 2:03.86s set by Lim Ching Hwang (2016). The time was just enough to place him on the podium in third but narrowly missed out on the Phnom Penh Sea Games qualifying mark of 2:03.73s.

Taiwan's Wang Hsing-Hao set a new meet record of 2:01.50s en route to gold. The old record of 2:02.14s was set by Triady Fauzi Sidik of Indonesia in 2016.

Ronan Zuberg Wantenaar (Namibia) claimed the silver on 2:03.64s.

Hoe Yean said he never expected to break the 200m individual medley national record as he was tired from competing in multiple events today.

He had earlier placed fourth in the 100m freestyle and later won gold in the 4x200m freestyle with Kuala Lumpur teammates Farhan Andi, Dhuha Zulfikry and Jayden Tan (7:47.12s).

"I really didn't know I broke the record until someone told me. It is not easy to do well in competitions when you are competing three events in the same day," said Hoe Yean.

"But I feel proud to set a new national record and it is a good boost ahead of the Sea Games (May 5-17). I believe that I can achieve a much better timing in the next competition.

"So far so good for me. I hope to do another good outing in the 200m freestyle tomorrow."

Phee Jinq En, who won women's 100m breaststroke gold on Saturday, bagged bronze in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:37.19s today.

The Selangor swimmer said her preparations for the Sea Games are going well. She is determined to keep working hard.

"I have qualified for the Sea Games in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke events but will discuss with my coach which events to compete in," said Jing En, who will be making her fifth Sea Games appearance in Cambodia.

In total, three meet records were shattered on the second day of the Malaysia Open.

Cai Bing Ron of Taiwan clocked 2:15.57s to break the men's 200m breaststroke meet record, erasing the previous mark of 2:15.58s set by India's Sandeep Sejwal (2016).

Another Taiwanese Wang Kuan-Hung broke the men's 200m butterfly by clocking 1:56.44s, beating the old record of 1:58.03s set by India's Sajan Prakash (2019).
