SINGAPORE: Wan Fazri Wan Zahari outpaced seven Singaporean athletes to clinch the men's 800m gold medal on the final day of the Singapore Open Athletics Championships at National Stadium today.
The Kelantan-born, who won gold in the Philippines Open at Ilagan City last month, clocked 1:57.39s in the final.
However, his time was slower than his personal best of 1:51.66 set at the Malaysia Games last year.
Singapore's Hariharan Krishnan (1:59.60) and Shawn Chia Wei En (2:00.10) settled for silver and bronze.
Sea Games-bound S. Maheswaran, who clocked the fastest time of 1:54.51 in the heats on Thursday, did not compete in the final due to a hamstring injury.
Wan Fazri, 22, said he broke free from the seven Singapore athletes in the final 100m to hit the tape first.
"I am happy to win gold, but I clocked a slow time. However, it is a boost ahead of my Sea Games debut in Phnom Penh next month," said Wan Fazri.
Malaysia's Mandy Goh Li is on the right track for the Sea Games after topping the women's 400m hurdles in 1:02.41s.
Singapore's Tyeisha Ren Khoo (1:05.05s) and Clenyce Tan (1:07.70s) came in second and third.
Malaysia's quartet of Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli, Azreen Nabila Alias, Nur Aishah Rofina Aling and Nur Afrina Batri Rizal clocked 45.70 for the women's 4x100m title.
However, the men's 4x100m quartet of Khairul Hafiz Jantan, Haiqal Hanafi, Arsyad Saat and Jonathan Nyepa were disqualified.
Abdul Wafiy Roslan, Ruslem Zikry Putra, Firdaus Zemi and Umar Osman clocked 3:14.46 to bag the men's 4x400m crown.
Ruslem Zikry Putra Roseli bagged silver in the men's 400m hurdles in 54.61.
Taiwan's Lin Yu Sian clocked 10.41 for the men's 100m title, while Singapore's Marc Brian Louis (10.44) and Leonard King of Australia (10.67) bagged silver and bronze.
As expected, Singapore's Shanti Pereira clinched the women's 100m with a meet record. She clocked 11.43 to finish ahead of Taiwan's Hu Chia-Chen (11.63) and Elizabeth An Tan of Singapore (11.91).
