Coach Jun Beom has vision to turn poomsae exponents into world champions

PHNOM PENH: National taekwondo coach Jin Jun Beom has a vision to turn his poomsae exponents into world champions.

And the coach is confident his charges can outgun their rivals, even the best from South Korea, on the world stage one day following several breakthroughs of late, including the two gold and two silver showing at the Sea Games here.

Last year, Nurul Hidayah Abdul Karim and Jason Loo grabbed attention when they won the Under-30 mixed pair silver at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships.

In the Sea Games, Nur Humaira Abdul Karim topped the women's recognised poomsae event on Friday.

Her sister, Nurul Hidayah, and Loo followed up with the mixed team recognised poomsae title.

Nurul Hidayah, Nur Humaira and Lim Jia Wei also delivered the women's team silver, and newcomer Chin Ken Haw finished second in the men's individual event.

"After the Asian Championships in the Philippines in March, we had a training camp in Korea.

"My charges sparred with Korean world champions before the Sea Games," said Korean Jun Beom.

"We could have won more than two gold medals here but it's still a good achievement.

"We won two titles at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur edition, so the achievement here is quite good.

"I believe my charges can improve and compete against the best.

"My ambition is to produce Malaysian world champions in this event.

"With enough exposure to higher-level competitions, our exponents might even beat the Koreans one day."
