KUALA LUMPUR: Snooker player Thor Chuan Leong delivered the nation's only gold medal in what was otherwise another slow day for the national contingent at the Phnom Penh Sea Games.
Thor showed his experience tonight as he outplayed an in-form Akani Songsermsawad 4-1 (74-42, 67-48, 53-72, 53-17, 63-21) in the men's singles final to reclaim the Asean crown. Thor had previously won the singles gold at the 2015 Singapore edition.
Lim Kok Leong, who lost to Akani (Thailand) in the semi-finals, took bronze.
Earlier today, Darryl Chia-Almie Muhamad Yakup lost 9-3 to Myanmar's Phone Myint Kyaw-Thaw Zhin Htet in the men's 9-ball pool event final. It was still a solid achievment by the duo as Malaysia had never reached the final in the category before.
Table tennis pair Choong Javen-Wong Qi Shen's also settled for silver in the men's doubles event after being outplayed (11-3, 8-11, 11-8, 11-3) by title favourites Koen Pang-Izaac Quek of Singapore.
It was nevertheless a gallant run to the final, giving Malaysia its first men's doubles medal at the Sea Games in 30 years.
The men's field hockey squad capped their round-robin campaign with a 4-2 win over Indonesia, thus maintaining their 100 per cent record in the competition so far.
They will play Singapore for the gold medal on Tuesday.
Men's singles shuttlers Lee Shun Yang and Leong Jun Hao as well as mixed doubles pair Yap Roy King-Cheng Su Yin also booked their slots in the semi-finals today.
