KUALA LUMPUR: Diver Bertrand Rhodict Anak Lises hopes to make a mark when he debuts at the Olympic Games in Paris next year.
The 18-year-old earned an Olympic ticket after reaching the men's 10m individual platform final at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, on Friday.
The Sarawak-born sealed an early Olympic ticket for Malaysia after finishing 10th in the semi-finals with 420.70 points.
"I am grateful for the support from my coaches, family and friends," said a delighted Bertrand.
"I will continue to work hard with the support of the National Sports Council and other concerned parties before the Paris Olympics.
"I am excited to be part of the Olympics."
Malaysian Swimming Federation secretary general Andy Low said Bertrand's qualification shows progress as no Malaysian male diver made the cut for the Tokyo Olympics two years ago.
"It is good to have at least a diver qualify for the Olympics through the World Championships.
"We are happy to see him bounce back from his performance in the platform synchro with Enrique Harold."
The pair finished 12th in the platform synchro final.
Bertrand will compete for the podium in the individual platform final on Saturday.
