Lawn bowler Izzat caps season with gold and silver in Hong Kong

KUALA LUMPUR: Lawn bowler Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple capped his fruitful season on a high note by winning one gold and one silver at the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic.

In the men's pairs final on Sunday, Izzat and Hizlee Rais triumphed over New Zealand's Sheldon Bagrie Howley-Craig Tinker with a 2-0 victory (8-4, 11-7), claiming the title.

In the singles, Izzat produced a gallant fight before succumbing to a 2-0 defeat (10-7, 11-8) against Ireland's Mark Wilson in the final on Nov 13.

"When I was first invited to the tournament in 2016, I returned empty-handed. It is great that I have won two medals in my second appearance," said Izzat.

"I defeated five lawn bowlers to reach the final of the singles event. In the pairs, Hizlee and I won nine out of the 11 group matches before going on to win the title."

In February, Izzat-Hizlee secured the pairs silver at the Asian Championships in Ipoh.

Following this success, Izzat clinched the singles bronze at the World Bowls Champion of Champions in Gold Coast, Australia.

Last month, the 31-year-old won the singles gold at the National Championships in Kuala Terengganu.

Meanwhile, compatriots Azlina Arshad and Emma Firyana Saroji secured bronze in the women's pairs in Hong Kong.
