Azeem fired up by sub-10 second run for Malaysian Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Boosted by a remarkable sub-10 second run last week in the United States, Azeem Fahmi is set to blaze the track in the Malaysian Open at Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan this weekend.

Malaysia's fastest man, Azeem, along with teammates Kanysola Ajayi, Dario Matau and Makanakishe Charamba, clocked a blistering 38.03 seconds to win the 4x100m for Auburn University at the NCAA Championships in Oregon.

The 20-year-old Perakian, who returned to Malaysia from the United States today, said the 38.03 was the world's fourth fastest time this year.

"Based on the 4x100m time, it shows that each of us clocked 9.50 seconds, which is a superb run.

"I ran 9.50 in the relay, and this shows that I can run a good race to beat the Olympic qualifying time of 10 seconds."

Azeem holds the national 100m record of 10.09, but the Olympic qualifying mark is 10.00.

Azeem, whose 100m race in Kuantan is on Saturday, said: "The Malaysian Open will be a big test for me as there are high expectations from the fans."
