Nicol comes to the defence of embattled Hamidin

PUTRAJYA: Squash legend Datuk Nicol David has come to the defence of the embattled Datuk Hamidin Amin, who is the Olympic chef de mission and FA of Malaysia president.

Eight-time world champion Nicol urged the public to unite in support of the national contingent when they compete at the Paris Olympics from July 26-Aug 11.

"Hamidin is a true supporter of the team and whatever happened is now in the past. Right now, we want to focus on the Olympics which is just 12 days away," said Nicol today.

Nicol, who is the deputy chef de mission, said it is time to focus on what is important ahead of the Olympics

"Everyone is ready and raring to go. We are all geared up, our sponsors are in, and they are also very happy that they can suit up our athletes well.

"Let's move forward and support our athletes competing in Paris."

Nicol was speaking after attending the Heriot-Watt University Malaysia graduation ceremony where she was also installed as Pro-Chancellor.

Hamidin, who is also the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) deputy president, has come under fire over several issues recently.

Sports fans had criticised OCM over the national contingent's official attire - which netizens deemed as "ugly" for the Paris Games, OCM later changed the attire's design.

Last month, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, expressed his displeasure with Hamidin after the Malaysia Football League sanctioned Selangor FC harshly over their withdrawal from the Charity Shield in May.
