Timeline of Malaysia's progress at the Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR: 1953 - The Federation of Malaya Olympic Council (FMOC) is founded to oversee the Olympic Movement in Malaya. It's known as the Olympic Council of Malaysia today.

1956 Melbourne - Malaya makes its debut at the Olympics with a total of 32 athletes competing in five sports.

North Borneo (present day Sabah) also participates in Melbourne, and sends two athletes for the men's triple jump. It will be North Borneo's only Olympic appearance.

Rome 1960 - Malaya makes its second Olympic appearance, this time sending a smaller contingent of 9 athletes competing in four sports.

Tokyo 1964 - Newly formed Malaysia makes its Olympic debut, sending a large contingent of 62 athletes in 10 sports.

1972 Munich - Badminton is included as a demonstration sport. It would, however, take another 20 years for it to officially be included in the Olympic programme.

1980 Moscow - Malaysia boycotts the Olympics in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

1992 Barcelona - Badminton officially makes its debut at the Olympics, and Malaysia is off to the races.

Brothers Razif and Jalani Sidek win the men's doubles bronze, as they become the first Malaysians to get an Olympic medal.

1996 Atlanta - Malaysia claims two badminton medals through Rashid Sidek (men's singles bronze) and Cheah Soon Kit-Yap Kim Hock (men's doubles silver).

Sydney 2000 - Malaysia makes its debut in diving. Among the three representatives is the venerable Leong Mun Yee, whose early success in the sport helped the diving programme gain more support from the sporting authorities and subsequently pave the way for future generations. She would go on to make five appearances.

The keirin event makes its debut in track cycling at the Olympics.

Athens 2004 - Diver Bryan Nickson Lomas, then 14, competes as the second youngest athlete at the Games.

Malaysia, however, fails to win a medal for the second consecutive edition of the Olympics.

Josiah Ng makes his Olympic debut and reaches the keirin final. Though Malaysia has competed in track cycling since the 1964 edition, Josiah's eye-opening performance would help pave the way for future generations, including Azizulhasni Awang.

Beijing 2008 - Lee Chong Wei wins the first of three silver Olympic medals (all in men's singles).

Diver Pandelela Rinong and track cyclist Azizulhasni make their Olympic debuts.

London 2012 - Pandelela wins women's 10m platform individual bronze, becomes first Malaysian woman to win an Olympic medal, and first Malaysian to win a medal in a sport other than badminton at the Games. Her success further fuels Malaysia's diving programme.

Chong Wei wins the second of his three silver medals.

Rio 2016 - Malaysia achieves its best ever performance at the Olympics with a four silver and one bronze haul in Brazil.

Divers Cheong Jun Hoong-Pandelela win the women's 10m platform synchronised silver while Azizulhasni clinches the keirin bronze, making him the first Malaysian to win a medal in Olympic cycling.

Chong Wei wins his third men's singles silver, making him the most successful Malaysian athlete in the history of the Olympics.

Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles) and Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong (men's doubles) also take silver in their respective events.

Tokyo 2020 - The Covid-19 pandemic forces the Olympics to be postponed to 2021. Athletes have to train and compete in a bubble (quarantine).

Azizulhasni wins silver in a controversial keirin final while shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik claim the men's doubles bronze.

Mun Yee, now 37, makes her fifth and final appearance at the Olympics, the most appearances of any Malaysian athlete.

Shuttler Lee Zii Jia makes his Olympic debut, but is edged by Chong Wei's long-time rival Chen Long of China in the last 16.

Paris 2024 - Azizulhasni, now 36, is set to make his fifth Olympic appearance, more than any other Malaysian male athlete.

Only 26 Malaysian athletes secure a slot in Paris, the smallest contingent since Athens 2004.

Their new Olympic apparel draws criticism from fans, forcing OCM to redesign the national kit less than a month before the greatest show on Earth.
