Mixed day for athletes in Paris, Zii Jia to begin campaign tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: Badminton pair Aaron Chia-Sooh Wooi Yik gave Malaysian fans a brief scare but there were otherwise no real surprises from the national contingent competing at the Paris Olympics today.

Aaron-Wooi Yik, who are among Malaysia's main medal prospects in Paris, lost the opening game in their match against Great Britain's Ben Lane-Sean Vendy.

The duo were forced to dig deep before clinching a 19-21, 21-16, 21-11 win in the men's doubles group A encounter which lasted one hour and 17 minutes.

As expected, women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah found it tough to make an impact against China's world No. 1 pair Chen Qing Chen-Jia Yi Fan. Despite fighting hard, Pearly-Thinaah succumbed to a 21-17, 22-20 defeat in the group A match.

Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, however, overcame tough resistance from Singapore's Terry Hee-Jessica Tan in the opening game before churning out a 23-21, 21-12 win in group D.

Tomorrow's matches will see Tan Jie-Ee Wei facing United States' Vinson Chiu-Jennie Gai while Aaron-Wooi Yik will face Canada's Adam Dong-Nyl Yakura.

Pearly-Thinaah will play Japan's world No 6 pair Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara while Lee Zii Jia will open his campaign against Viren Nettasinghe (Sri Lanka) in the men's singles group G competition.

In swimming today, Khiew Hoe Yean clocked three minutes and 51.66 seconds to place fourth from eight swimmers in his men's 400m freestyle heat.

Hoe Yean's time placed him 27th overall from 37 swimmers that competed in the event. He thus missed the top-eight cut for the final, which will be held tomorrow.

Teammate Rouxin Tan will compete in the women's 100m breaststroke tomorrow.

Shooter Johnathan Wong's campaign in the men's 10m air pistol came to an early end after he placed 26th from 33 shooters in the preliminaries after firing 570.

National archers Ariana Nur Dania Zairi, Nurul Azreena Fazil and Syaqiera Mashayikh will also see action in the women's team event tomorrow.

They will take on Indonesia's Diananda Choirunisa, Syifa Nurafifah Kamal and Rezza Octavia in the 1/8 elimination round.
