Heartbreak for Syaqiera as archer loses by an arrow at Paris Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR: Archer Syaqiera Mashayikh blew an opportunity to reach the third round of the Paris Olympic women's individual event, losing by an arrow, following a poor attempt in the fifth set at Esplanade des Invalides.

The Johorean was leading 5-3 against Brazil's Ana Luiza Sliachtias Caetano after four sets (27-27, 28-28, 28-24, 27-27).

However, the 23-year-old Malaysian crumbled in the fifth set, losing 29-24, which allowed the Brazilian to level the score at 5-5.

On countback, Caetano was awarded the victory with a final score of 6-5, winning by an arrow (135-134).

Despite the defeat, Syaqiera should take pride in her achievement as she became the first Malaysian to reach the second round of an Olympic archery individual event.

In the first round, Syaqiera was in smashing form, defeating Moldova's Alexandra Mirca 6-0 (30-27, 27-23, 26-24).

Compatriots Ariana Nur Mohamad Zairi and Nurul Azreena Fazil will compete in the first round on Wednesday.

Ariana will face Italy's Chiara Rebagliati, while Azreena will take on Turkey's Elif Berra Gokkir.
