PARIS: Following is a summary of current sports news briefs.

SWIMMING

Walsh dedicates US relay world record to disqualified sister.

American swimmer Gretchen Walsh said she was devastated when she heard her sister Alex had been disqualified in the 200 metres individual medley on Saturday, dedicating her U.S. gold in the mixed 4x100m medley relay to her elder sibling.

Alex, the 2021 silver medallist, had touched the wall third in her event behind Canada's Summer McIntosh and American compatriot Kate Douglass.

Ninth gold for Dressel as US smash mixed 4x100 medley record.

Caeleb Dressel won a ninth career Olympic gold medal from the sidelines as the United States romped to victory in the mixed 4x100 metres medley relay in world record time at the Paris Games on Saturday.

The winning time of three minutes 37.43 seconds smashed the record of 3:37.58 set by previous champions Britain at the 2021 Tokyo Games.

Ledecky takes record ninth gold as Summer sparkles.

Katie Ledecky tore up the record books again at the Paris Games by claiming a ninth career gold medal, while teenager Summer McIntosh put her name among the greats as Canada's first triple champion at a single Olympics.

Caeleb Dressel joined compatriot Ledecky with a ninth gold without diving into the La Defense Arena pool when his United States teammates swept to the mixed medley relay title in world record time.

McIntosh makes Canadian history with third gold.

Summer McIntosh became the first Canadian athlete to take three golds from a single Olympics when she won the 200 metres individual medley at the Paris Games on Saturday.

The 17-year-old swimmer did it in an Olympic record time of two minutes 06.56 seconds, taking down the 2016 record of 2:06.58 set by Hungary's Katinka Hosszu, to complete a medley double after winning the 400 last Monday

BASKETBALL

U.S. to face Brazil in basketball men's quarters.

Reigning Olympic champions the United States will face Brazil in the quarter-finals of the Olympic men's basketball tournament after beating Puerto Rico 104-83 in Lille on Saturday to seal top spot in Group C with three wins out of three. Hosts France will face Canada in the last eight, while Serbia take on Australia and Germany meet Greece.

ATHLETICS

LaFond wins triple jump to claim Dominica's first-ever Olympic medal.

Thea LaFond made history for the Caribbean island nation of Dominica by winning gold in the triple jump on Saturday to claim the country's first-ever Olympic medal. Jamaica's Shanieka Ricketts took silver and American Jasmine Moore claimed bronze.

American Crouser wins shot put gold for third time in a row.

American Ryan Crouser became the first man to "three-peat" in the Olympic shot put on Saturday, adding another gold medal to his packed trophy cabinet with a mighty throw of 22.90 metres. His compatriot Joe Kovacs won his third straight silver and Jamaica's Rajindra Campbell took bronze.

BASKETBALL 3x3

U.S. to take on Spain, Germany face Canada in women's semis.

Reigning champions the United States, Spain, Germany and Canada qualified for the semi-finals of the women's 3x3 basketball tournament at the Paris Olympics on Saturday. Germany beat Spain 18-15 as they both earned places in the final four by finishing first and second in the pool stage and will next face Canada and the United States respectively.

GYMNASTICS

Biles golden again after vault triumph at Paris Games.

Simone Biles' appetite to collect gold medals showed no sign of waning as she soared above her rivals in the vault final on Saturday to scoop a third top prize at the Paris Olympics, while Ireland and the Philippines enjoyed a historic day in gymnastics.

Three years after it looked like Biles' gymnastics career was all but over after she was forced to withdraw from the Tokyo Games to protect her mental health, she has now won all three women's titles that have been up for grabs in the City of Love.

Carey savours vault redemption at Paris Games.

Jade Carey's three-year wait for a shot at redemption in the Olympic vault competition was agonisingly extended when she was forced to go last in Saturday's final at the Paris Games but when her moment came she did not miss, earning a bronze medal. At the Tokyo Games, Carey was the top qualifier but a mistimed approach forced her to abort her planned vault and she ultimately landed in last place. --REUTERS
