Melaka Sukma wushu squad defend overall title with seven-gold haul

KUCHING: Melaka's wushu team reaffirmed their supremacy at the 2024 Malaysian Games (SUKMA) by securing seven gold medals, defending their overall champion title on the final day of competition at the Wushu SSC Hall here today.

The team's triumph included three golds from the toulu discipline, with Wong Kai Xin excelling in the women's gunshu, Nor Azira Kamarudzaman claiming victory in the women's nandao and Bryan Ti Kai Jie emerging victorious in the men's nandao.

This marked Bryan's second gold of the games, following his earlier win in the men's nanquan event on Wednesday.

Another Melaka gold came from the sanda discipline, where Loi Xue Jing delivered a thrilling victory over Penang's Skyler Khor Zhan Quan in the men's 60kg final.

Overall, Melaka dominated with six golds in toulu and one in sanda, underscoring their status as a powerhouse in wushu at SUKMA.

In addition to their gold medals, Melaka also earned four silvers and five bronzes, though they fell slightly short of their nine-gold performance in the previous edition held in Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, Sabah had a strong showing in the sanda events, clinching three of the eight gold medals on offer, with their gold coming from Amirah Sofea Azlan in the women's 48kg, Dione Babyline Fely in the women's 52kg and Fyenlly Himon in the men's 52kg category.

The Federal Territories (FT) also made an impact, with Junior Thien Ji Sen and Chan Yue Sheng capturing gold in the men's 56kg and 65kg categories, respectively, propelling FT to second place in the overall standings with a haul of four gold, four silver and seven bronze medals.

Penang secured third place with four gold, four silver and five bronze, bolstered by victories from Lim Jue Xin in the women's qiangshu and Muhammad Danish Aizad Mohd Firdaus in the men's gunshu.

Host team Sarawak finished in fourth place, with Stephanie Ngu Chai Ern's third individual gold in qiangshu contributing to their final tally of three gold, five silver and four bronze medals.

Sabah ranked fifth with three gold and one silver, followed by Selangor with two gold. Perak, Kedah, Terengganu, Brunei and Negeri Sembilan each secured one gold medal. - BERNAMA
